Our origin
The Drikung Kagyu Order was founded in 1179 by Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön. It is headed by two Kyabgön Rinpoches: His Holiness Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang and His Holiness Drikung Kyabgön Chungtsang. While Chungtsang Rinpoche resides in Lhasa, Chetsang Rinpoche has established the Drikung Kagyu headquarters in exile in Dehra Dun, northeast India.
Tibetan Buddhism is composed of four main monastic orders, each of which is further subdivided into sub-orders, monastic universities, or transmission lineages. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche is the 37th throne holder of one of these sub-orders, the Drikung Kagyu lineage, and the 7th reincarnation of Chetsang Rinpoche. He has held the helm of the Drikung Kagyu lineage for over 3 decades, tirelessly devoting himself to its preservation, strengthening, and rebuilding in exile.

Rinpoche was enthroned as Khenchen in 2001 by HH Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche at Jang Chub Ling Monastery in India. Recalling the struggles of his early years, Khenchen Rinpoche inspires and supports monks, nuns and lay people in their Dharma practice and is always ready to help them in any way he can. He gives himself freely to all. With his heart and mind firmly turned towards the Dharma, he shows the way with compassion and patience.
