Our origin

Garab Dorje was born around 60 AD, and is considered the first human Rigdzin Knowledge Holder (rig din: Vidyadhara) of the Dzogchen teachings in our time. Garab Dorje's main student was Manjusrimitra who in turn passed his knowledge on to Sri Singha, both of whom attained full realization. Since then the lineage of Dzogchen masters has remained intact and unbroken until today, all the way back to Chögyal Namkhai Norbu.

The International Dzogchen Community is a global lay community based on the principles of awareness and respect. It emerged spontaneously around its inspiration and teacher, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, and is open to everyone.
The Norbuling Dzogchen Community of Peru was founded by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and a group of practitioners more than 25 years ago. It carries out various activities weekly, as well as special courses with local and foreign instructors.

Chögyal Namkhai Norbu

Dzogchen Master and Spiritual Director

Chögyal Namkhai Norbu (Tibet 1938-Italy 2018) was a unique figure in the contemporary spiritual world, an eminent scholar of Tibetan culture and a teacher of life.

Born in Ge'u, Derge County in 1938, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the great Dzogchen master Adzom Drugpa (1842-1924). As such, he underwent a rigorous traditional education, successfully completing his studies in philosophy and letters at an early age. In 1955 he met and received teachings from his principal teacher, Changchub Dorje (1863-1961), whose way of life and method of transmitting Dzogchen knowledge became a lasting source of profound inspiration for him.
In 1959, he was invited to Italy by the renowned Italian Tibetologist and Orientalist Giuseppe Tucci, with whom he collaborated on the catalogue of Tibetan texts of the ISMEO (Institute for the Middle and Far East) in Rome, and in 1962 he became professor of Tibetan language and literature at the University of Naples "l'Orientale" where he continued to teach until 1992.

In 1971 he began teaching Yantra Yoga, and in 1976, at the request of students from diverse backgrounds and origins, he gave the first teachings on Dzogchen Atiyoga.
For more than 50 years he dedicated his life to making this ancient teaching, a true heritage of humanity, known to thousands of people around the world.
Chögyal Namkhai Norbu passed away peacefully at his residence in Gadeling, Arcidosso, Grosseto, Italy on 27 September 2018.

Dzogchen is a knowledge that aims at the evolution of the individual. Entering into the dimension of these teachings leads people to open their minds and to assume a broader and more positive vision of life. Total perfection is the natural condition of every human being, and naturally leads to compassion and non-violence. Finding oneself in a state of relaxed attention integrated with our perception is the essence of the experience. Yantra Yoga, Tibetan movement yoga, Vajra Dance, Khaita Joyful Dances and sitting meditation sessions are part of our daily practices that help us to cultivate in a simple way a full acceptance without worry and a limitless openness to all circumstances.
